Developing future leaders requires more than classroom learning. Today’s students need practical experience, strong communication skills, and the confidence to lead in real-world environments.
At the Asian Institute of Hospitality & Management (AIHM) in Bangkok, leadership development is embedded into every learning experience through industry collaboration, experiential learning, and executive education.
This approach was demonstrated through AIHM’s participation in the AMCHAM Scholarship Orientation Camp 2025–2026, where students from across Thailand were equipped with essential leadership and professional skills.
AIHM’s Role in Developing Future Leaders
AIHM played a key role in delivering leadership training during the AMCHAM Scholarship Orientation Camp, bringing its expertise in executive education, leadership communication, and industry-driven learning to support the next generation of leaders.
As Samantha Marion, AIHM’s Director of Global Partnerships, serves on the Human Capital Committee of AMCHAM Thailand, AIHM actively contributes to initiatives that connect education with real industry needs.
After the event concluded she had the opportunity to sit down with Pailinsiri “Pailin” Gronphet, Foundation and Special Projects Specialist, from AMCHAM Thailand to reflect on the vision, impact, and future of the AMCHAM Scholarship Orientation Camp, a program designed to empower scholarship students from across Thailand with essential skills for both academic and professional success.
Pailin said, above all, “We wanted to create a safe space where every student feels confident to speak up and be themselves.”
During the session, students developed:
- Leadership communication skills
- Executive presence
- Confidence in professional environments
This reflects AIHM’s learning philosophy, combining academic knowledge with real-world application.
When designing this year’s camp, Pailin approached the process by reflecting on her own student experience.
“I kept asking myself: If I were a second-year university student, what would I wish I had known before entering my third year, or the professional world?”
This mindset shaped a program that focused on reflection, habit formation, and practical application, including an evolved version of the Ikigai workshop, which was co-created with by Samantha and Pailin. Rather than treating learning as a one-time event, the program emphasized continuous practice and self-awareness.
“Learning becomes effective when it turns into habits,” Pailin noted. “That’s how we help bridge the gap between the academic world and the professional world.”
At the conclusion of the session the students shared great feedback:
- I love Miss Samantha very much she was very nice to us and I knew that my personality because her section.
- IKIGAI by Asian Institute of Hospitality & Management (AIHM) made me know who I am exactly.
- Samatha from AIHM, She’s very nice. Always smile and easy to talk to.
- Samantha – She helped me overcome my fears and start doing what I wanted to do.
- I would like to choose Samantha because the activities that she bring to us it’s very interesting and she continue that program so perfect that I never get bored.
What Skills Do Future Leaders Need Today?

- Real-world problem-solving skills
At AIHM, these capabilities are developed through experiential learning, workshops, and executive education programmes designed with real business applications.
Skills That Go Beyond the Classroom
One of the most valuable outcomes of the camp was the development of practical, transferable skills.
Students engaged in activities that encouraged them to:
- Collaborate with peers
- Think creatively
- Step outside their comfort zones
AIHM’s Executive Education programmes are designed not only for students, but also for working professionals and middle managers looking to advance their careers in hospitality and business leadership.
These programmes focus on:
- Leadership communication

Real Impact on Students
Participants responded positively to the session, highlighting the value of practical learning and personal development.
The workshop Designing the Life of Your Dreams with Ikigai, co-created by AIHM and AMCHAM, helped students reflect on their strengths, purpose, and future goals.
This type of learning goes beyond theory, helping students build clarity, confidence, and direction for their future careers.
Advice for the Next Generation of Leaders
One key message from the programme was clear:
“Some of the most valuable learning doesn’t come from formal training, but from conversations, experiences, and challenges.”
Students were encouraged to:
- Take initiative
- Embrace challenges
- Learn from failure
- Continuously improve
Leadership today is defined not only by knowledge, but by adaptability, resilience, and a willingness to learn.
Why Leadership Training Matters Today
As industries evolve rapidly, organisations are looking for individuals who can think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with confidence.
For students and young professionals, Pailin offered practical advice on how to maximize opportunities like the Orientation Camp: “Some of the most valuable learning doesn’t come from formal training, it comes from small conversations with mentors, peers, facilitators, or speakers.”
Her advice: Participate actively, step outside your comfort zone and don’t fear failure. “Failure isn’t the opposite of success,” she said. “It’s part of it. What matters is how quickly you recover, adapt, and move forward, while being kind to yourself.”
Pailin encourages young leaders not to let their background define their limits. “Success isn’t just about hard skills. Adaptability, empathy, and a willingness to learn are what truly sustain growth.”
She also emphasized the importance of celebrating small victories, whether it’s completing a project, overcoming a fear, or simply making progress. “What matters most is not failing, but how quickly you can recover, adapt, and move forward.”
Leadership training is no longer optional. It plays a critical role in:
- Career progression
- Business performance
- Team success
- Long-term growth
Through its programmes and industry collaborations, AIHM continues to develop future-ready leaders equipped for global careers.
