FAQs

What is the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY)?

The International Foundation Year (IFY) is a one-year academic preparation programme that helps students progress from high school to university.

It builds English proficiency, academic skills, and subject knowledge needed to succeed in an international degree.

Delivered at AIHM College, an official NCUK Study Centre, it guarantees progression to over 60 partner universities across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, and Canada.

The IFY is ideal for students who have finished high school and want to start their international university journey with strong academic and English preparation.

It’s also an excellent choice for families who want their children to begin in a supportive, English-speaking environment in Bangkok before studying abroad.

Students who complete the IFY can progress directly to the first year of a degree at an NCUK university.

Students can choose from two academic pathways:

  • Business Pathway: Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics for Business, and English for Academic Purposes.
  • IT Pathway: Computer Science, Mathematics for IT, and English for Academic Purposes.

Both pathways combine subject learning with English and study skills that prepare students for university-style coursework and assessments.

Applicants should normally:

  • Be 17 years old or above at the start of the programme.
  • Have completed Mathayom 5 or 6, Year 11 or 12, or equivalent (IGCSE, O Levels, A Levels, IB, or GED Diploma).
  • Have English proficiency of IELTS 5.0 or Cambridge B2 (or equivalent).

Students who need to improve their English can take a preparatory course before starting the IFY.

  • Smaller class sizes and personalised teaching for every student.
  • English-speaking, multicultural environment on the AIHM Bangkok campus.
  • Academic mentoring and counselling from experienced international faculty.
  • Access to a vibrant hospitality setting and global student community.

These advantages make the transition to university abroad smoother, both academically and personally.

Successful students progress directly to Year 1 at an NCUK university—with guaranteed entry (subject to meeting progression requirements).

Popular destinations include the University of Manchester, University of Leeds, RMIT Melbourne, and University of Auckland, among others.

AIHM counsellors support every student through the university selection and visa process.

Studying the IFY at AIHM College offers the same NCUK qualification but with a more affordable cost of living and a strong support network close to home.

It allows students to develop academic and life skills in a familiar environment before transferring overseas—making the transition smoother for both students and parents.

The IFY offers two intakes each year — typically January and September.

Early application is encouraged for scholarship consideration and to allow time for visa and housing arrangements.
